Meet the Artist — Debra Good
Silk Sensations began with a father, a daughter, and a desire to keep a very special form of art in the family.
More than 25 years ago, Debra’s father, Danny, encouraged her to learn the unique silk-painting process he had developed. He wanted Debra to carry the family art into the future, so she dedicated herself to learning everything she could from him. What began as lessons from her father quickly became a passion of her own. Debra fell in love with the process, began developing her own artistic style, and soon afterward decided to start her own business, Silk Sensations.
At the time, Debra was raising her children and wanted to be able to stay home with them while also helping support her family. Creating Silk Sensations allowed her to do both. What started at her father’s side grew into her own business, giving her the opportunity to be present for her children while building something creative and meaningful.
Today, her children are all grown and continue to support their mom and the decision she made so many years ago to carry this special family tradition forward.
Debra’s journey has taken her in several directions over the years, but creativity, family, caring for others, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit have remained at the center of her life. Along the way, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Operations Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Her education has supported the different chapters of her life, from owning and growing Silk Sensations to her career as a Registered Nurse.
Today, Debra calls Maui home, where she continues to create her hand-painted wearable art while also working as an RN in Long-Term Care. Caring for Maui’s kūpuna has become another meaningful part of her life. Her role is about more than providing nursing care. She listens to their stories, shares in their days, offers comfort and companionship, and strives to provide the warmth and presence of family when their own loved ones cannot be there.
Although nursing and painting may seem like two very different worlds, Debra sees a connection between them. Both are about caring for people and bringing something positive into their lives—whether through comfort and compassion or through beauty, color, and art.
Over the years, Silk Sensations has grown far beyond its beginnings, with customers around the world enjoying Debra’s creations. Yet the heart of the business remains the same. Every piece is still individually hand-painted, and because of the nature of the process, no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. Each has its own beautiful variations, movement, colors, and personality.
From a father teaching his daughter a treasured art form to a daughter carrying that tradition forward more than 25 years later, Silk Sensations is more than a business. It is a family legacy—hand-painted, one piece at a time.
